Sampling is the reuse of a portion (or sample) of a sound recording in another recording.
Sampling is a foundation of hip hop music, which emerged when producers in the 1980s began sampling funk and soul records, particularly drum breaks. It has influenced many other genres of music, particularly electronic music and pop.
James Brown, Loleatta Holloway, Fab Five Freddy and Led Zeppelin are a few of the most sampled artists.
The Beastie Boys formed in 1981, releasing their first album "Licensed to Ill" in 1986. "Licensed to Ill" heavily relied on sampling, but their second album "Paul's Boutique" (released in 1989) was almost completely composed from samples.
"Rhymin & Stealin" is the first track off of "Licensed to Ill" and contains samples from three well known songs.
- Led Zeppelin – "When The Levee Breaks" (drum track)
- Black Sabbath – "Sweet Leaf" (guitar riff)
- The Clash – "I Fought The Law" (samples of lyrics)
